Zimbabwe, a nation of 12 million people, is striving against great odds to create a democratic, inclusive politics to enable it to develop and prosper for all its peoples. We in Australia have historic connections to liberated Zimbabwe, and we can help the Zimbabwean people now.
The current ZANU-PF regime of President Robert Mugabe is mounting and escalating a campaign of murder, bashings and intimidation against the democratic opposition - black and white - in a bid to hold onto power at the April 2002 Presidential Elections. The broad, trade union-based democratic opposition movement is united in the Movement for Democratic Change, which won 57 out of 120 seats at the June 2000 parliamentary elections - despite a truly massive and brutal campaign to suppress it.
Zimbabwe is a member of the Commonwealth, an association of Britain and the 52 former British colonies (plus Mozambique), which is based on principles of democracy, human rights and genuine development. President Mugabe plans to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Brisbane from October 6-9, and the CHOGM Business Forum in Melbourne from October 3-5.
CHOGM is the biggest international event for Zimbabwe before the April 2002 Presidential elections. It is a major focus for MDC efforts to mobilise international support for democratic change in Zimbabwe. MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai (previously General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions) and MDC Secretary for International Relations Mrs Sekai Holland will lead a high-powered MDC delegation to Australia for CHOGM, starting from late September. ZIC Inc is coordinating this tour and the first step in the process is to raise funds for our share of the costs - $10,000. The ZIC Brisbane Committee is also raising funds in Queensland.
ZIC was incorporated in mid-1999 at the instigation of Mrs Holland, to build friendly relations between the peoples of Australia and Zimbabwe, and to support movements for democracy, equal rights, and ecologically sustainable development in Zimbabwe.
