January 29, 2002,
Dear Friend,
Zimbabwe, a nation of 12 million people, is striving against great odds to create a democratic, inclusive society so that all its peoples can develop and prosper. We in Australia have historic connections to liberated Zimbabwe, and we can help the Zimbabwean people now.
Black farmworkers - 240,000 households - are a key target of the calculated escalation of bashings, murders and destruction of houses by the militias of the ruling ZANU-PF led by President Robert Mugabe. They are being starved through the forcible cessation of work on the 4,400 commercial farms in Zimbabwe. Now Zimbabwe has run out of maize stocks, apart from those on farms, and the government is seizing these. Mugabe has made sure that food is a major weapon in the battle for votes in the March 9-10 presidential elections. The message is clear, if you don’t agree to vote ZANU-PF, you will starve.
A Trust Fund and a system of community food centres are established in Zimbabwe to try to cope with this crisis. ZIC has been asked to URGENTLY send funds to enable maize meal to be distributed directly from farms to farmworker families now without secure access to food.
A$5,000 can finance food for 3,000 people for three weeks. We can raise more than that, and together with other contributors, we can make a difference. Now is the moment of truth for Zimbabwe.
ZIC was incorporated in mid-1999 at the instigation of Mrs Sekai Holland, to build friendly relations between the peoples of Australia and Zimbabwe, and to support movements for democracy, equal rights, and sustainable development in Zimbabwe.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Meredith Burgmann MLC Peter Murphy
President Secretary
