Attack On Vop Is An Attack On Freedom Of Speech
The MDC condemns the bomb attack in Harare on the offices of the independent radio station, Voice of the People. The attack signifies once again that there are sinister elements within Zimbabwe who are determined to destroy the independent media and violate one of the central tenets of any democracy: freedom of speech.
Independent media such as VOP provides people with the truth and plays a pivotal role in challenging the irresponsible propaganda that emanates from the state media, whose sole purpose is to dangerously distort, and deliberately misrepresent, the crisis that is currently affecting ordinary Zimbabweans.
The draconian Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act revealed the determination of the illegitimate Mugabe regime to clamp down and censure freedom of speech in Zimbabwe.
The bomb attack on VOP is a stark reminder of this brutal determination and underlines the precious position of freedom of speech in a country where the ruling authorities treat such cherished democratic values with overt contempt.
