MOVEMENT FOR DEMOCRATIC CHANGE
Building Fund for the MDC Bulawayo Offices
Progress Report No. 3 Period 2/1- 16/1/02
"The Australian High Commissioner ,Mr.Jonathan Brown, visited the MDC offices in Bulawayo on Wednesday 9th January 2002 to get a first-hand account of its destruction recently, and to see current reconstruction work. Mr. Brown said Australia was opposed to all acts of political violence and vandalism, no matter who commits them". Mr. Brown is seen in the attached photographs.
Work started in earnest on the 2nd January. The four main offices at the rear of the building are now being painted and glazing will be complete this week as will the plumbing to the renovated toilets.
Progress on the second phase, being the original front section, has once again been quite remarkable with "the team" performing dare I say miracles. All walls and door frames have now been replaced and plastering will be complete by the 20th January. There has been a small set back with regard to the precast beam for the front veranda area. This has occurred as a result of the need for the concrete to reach a workable strength. It is hoped that this will be in position soon at which time the brickwork to the front gable end will be completed.
It is hoped that the roof/ceilings will be completed by the 26th January. During this time, floors, plumbing, electrical installation and the hanging doors will take place consecutively. Occupation is now targeted for Monday 4th February.
Great difficulty has been experienced in obtaining the roof timbers. We desperately need to locate 18 No 230mm or 210mm by 50mm by 5.1m long beams. These should be planed and straight. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
The estimated cost of the timber for the roof is in the region of $100,000. None of what has been achieved to date would have been possible without your support and we again thank you for your generosity.
However, building costs to day escalate continuously and our "kitty" needs topping up. We regretfully have to again appeal to our supporters generosity to complete the change. We have to remind you that WE CAN ONLY ACCEPT FUNDS FROM ZIMBABWEAN SOURCES, as fundraising for political parties from external sources is illegal under Zimbabwean law.
