MDC's secretary-general to hand himself over to police
June 09, 2003, 08:00
Zimbawe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) says Welshman Ncube, its secretary-general, will be handing himself over to the police this morning. Police have been looking for Ncube since Saturday.
He is due to face treason charges in the Harare High Court along with Morgan Tsvangirai, the MDC leader. The charges relate to the MDC's recent protests, which the government says were aimed at removing President Robert Mugabe illegally. Tsvangirai also faces separate treason charges for allegedly plotting to kill Mugabe.
Innocent Changonda, Tsvangirai's lawyer, says Tsvirangirai is being held in a cell with two others at Borrowdale Prison in Harare. The United States and the European Union have condemned his arrest, and told the government to stop its violence towards protesters.
Mugabe has reiterated that he has no plans to quit. In an interview with the SABC, Mugabe said he did not intend retiring in a situation where Zimbabwe's people are disunited, and where certain of the country's objectives have not been achieved.
