MDC President arrested in Kadoma
The MDC President, Morgan Tsvangirai was this afternoon arrested and is currently at Kadoma police station. The President was part of the MDC campaign team, which had a very successful road show in Kadoma earlier in the day.
The President was arrested on allegations that he had instructed MDC youths to attack one ZANU PF youth. According to the police, the ZANU PF youth claims to have been attacked by people who were moving in a green twin cab on the instruction of the MDC President. On the basis of such flimsy and clumsy allegations, President Tsvangirai was invited to the police station where he is held until the police have finished their so-called investigations.
While the MDC President is being held at the police station, a group of ZANU PF youths has attacked the MDC Election Centre and chased away everyone at the centre, which is at the home of the MDC candidate.
We are not surprised by the behaviour of the police who have found it necessary to arrest in order to investigate the allegations leveled against our President by a ZANU PF youth. The Zimbabwean police force have long demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that they are a partisan police force that takes instructions from ZANU PF. A catalogue of attacks that have been perpetrated with impunity by known ZANU PF supporters in the presence of the police without the culprits being arrested confirms the partisan nature of the force.
The police have exhibited a very high level of docility and disinterest when dealing with human rights abuses against our members by ZANU PF thugs. The reason is simple; the police have now been turned into a ZANU PF ancillary machine, which is used to perpetrate mayhem against members of the opposition.
We once again call upon the few police officers that still have their professional soul to refuse to be used by ZANU PF.
We encourage the people of Kadoma to prove to the regime that violence does not pay by overwhelmingly voting for the MDC candidate.
