Security Council Must Say About Zimbabwe

The Namibian National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) hereby joins other human rights organizations and other stake holders in the SADC region and beyond by renewing its firm and strong condemnation of the dangerous human rights and humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe.

Continuous deterioration in the human rights and humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe is a clear indication of impunity on the part of President Robert Mugabe and his close associates in their defiance of both international public opinion and norms of international human rights, humanitarian and criminal law.

NSHR reiterates its long-held position that the situation in Zimbabwe---characterized by deliberate and systematic summary executions, torture, including rape, enforced disappearances and prolonged detention without trial of real or perceived Government critics as well as mass starvation---constitutes a threat to international peace and security and a crime against humanity as contemplated in the UN Charter and the Rome Statute, respectively. As such, it must be treated accordingly by SADC, African Union, European Union and United Nations.

“In light of the impunity on the part of President Mugabe and his associates, we are calling upon the United Nations Security Council to classify and treat the Zimbabwean human rights and humanitarian situation as it is—a threat to international peace and security and a crime against humanity. The international must not wait until it is too little too late”, NSHR executive director Phil ya Nangoloh recommended this morning.
