COSATU condemns closure of Daily News
The Congress of South African Trade Unions deplores the closure of the Harare Daily News. The court decision, and the undemocratic law under which it was taken - the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act - are further evidence of the abuse of basic democratic rights taking place in Zimbabwe. The law and the judgement make it a crime for journalists to carry out their work without government permission. This is totally incompatible with universally recognised principles of the right to freedom of expression.
COSATU also extends its support and solidarity to the 279 workers at the Daily News, and the hundreds of vendors and their families, who now face unemployment and very little prospect of finding another job, given the country's 70% unemployment rate.
COSATU supports the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions in their campaign against this and other abuses of human and worker rights and reiterates its support for the demand to reinstate its President, Lovemore Matombo, who has been sacked by his employer, Zimpost.
