EU Ministers Renew Sanctions on Zimbabwe

Amid the rapidly deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe, EU Ministers are today renewing sanctions against the Mugabe regime. However, there is disappointment that the EU is not taking action against those bankrolling the regime, with EU Ministers agreeing only to renew existing measures and failing to introduce sanctions against Mugabe's business backers.

Geoffrey Van Orden MEP, Conservative Spokesman on Human Rights in the European Parliament, said:

"While I am relieved that sanctions are being renewed, it is very disappointing that the EU has not used this opportunity to make its measures more effective or to introduce tough new sanctions. One week after Mugabe decreed he would lock opponents up for 30 days without trial, the EU's response is to take no additional action.

The British Government has made little effort to convince EU partners of the need for a tougher approach on Zimbabwe. Putting Mugabe under increased pressure could mean everything to the suffering millions in Zimbabwe.

No one believes that Zimbabwe's crisis can be solved in Europe. Southern African states, and South Africa in particular, now need to take strong action against Mugabe in the interests of all the people of the region. President Mbeki's quiet diplomacy has not worked. It is time for effective measures."
