Merkel and Vaatz meet Zimbabwean Opposition - Human rights debate this week in Parliament
The chairperson of the CDU/CSU-faction in the German Parliament, Dr. Angela Merkel MP, and the deputy-chairman of the CDU/CSU, Arnold Vaatz MP, met with a delegation of the Zimbabwean opposition party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) earlier today.
The delegation was led by the leader of the parliamentary faction of the MDC, Mr. Gibson Sibanda MP.
Gibson Sibanda gave an overview on the disastrous situation in Zimbabwe. He explained the position of his party in regards to the upcoming elections next year, which he fears will not be free and fair.
The board of the CDU/CSU assured the MDC assistance in all attempts of democratization. The CDU/CSU recognizes the vital importance of democratization in Zimbabwe for the stability of the entire Southern African region. The Republic of South Africa plays a key role in this process.
The Zimbabwean delegation requested international assistance to monitor the events in Zimbabwe. A detailed assessment of the human rights situation is in the interest of the 60th Human Rights Commission of the United Nations. Dr. Merkel assured the Zimbabwean delegation of her full support in this matter.
The CDU/CSU-faction will present a parliamentary motion to strengthen the role of human rights within international policy. This motion will demand the Zimbabwe issue to be set on the agenda of the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations.
