The Zimbabwe Peacebuilding Initiative (ZimPI) joins the international community in commemorating the United Nations Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures and calls for the unconditional lifting of all forms of sanctions against Zimbabwe imposed by the UK and its allies, USA and Australia.

This day reaffirms the global consensus that justice, peace and sustainable development can only flourish in an environment where all nations, large and small are accorded respect, equality, and fair treatment within the community of nations.

Unilateral coercive measures (UCMs) imposed outside the framework of the United Nations Charter undermine the principles of international law, multilateralism, and diplomacy.

They inflict disproportionate psycho, social and economic harm on ordinary citizens, institutionalise corruption, weaken national institutions, obstruct initiatives towards inclusive development and stability.

As a peacebuilding organisation grounded in the encouragement of ones personal introspection before engaging others, family, household and community based conversations aimed at leading to the long overdue national dialogue that enables a process towards national cohesion, community resilience and nation building, ZimPI reiterates that externally imposed punitive measures are unjust, they prevent the creation of a healthy environment of peace.

Instead, they constrain livelihoods, disrupt social services, entrench divisions, contrary to global commitments such as the UN @SDG2030 by 2030, the AU Vision 63-The Africa We Want, these being Zimbabwe’s Declaration on the Right to Development.

We echo the United Nations’ call for the removal of unilateral coercive measures in favour of constructive engagement, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty.

Zimbabweans aspire for justice, peace and shared prosperity, best realised through open dialogue, partnership, mutual respect between and among nations.

#ZimPI acknowledges the resilience of Zimbabweans who continue to pursue justice, peace, unity and development under these challenging circumstances.

We encourage all stakeholders, local, regional, and international to strengthen collaborative efforts that promote peacebuilding, inclusive governance for socio-economic recovery.

As we mark this important day, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering the traditional culture of home based conversations leading to national dialogue to strengthen households, families, and communities, advancing initiatives that contribute to a just society and lasting peace in Zimbabwe and the broader region. //Ends.
